Sjukla is an artisanal Belgian chocolaterie founded in 2012 by Ela Van Coillie while she was living in Belgium. Ela trained as a chef with a special focus on chocolate, honing her skills in the heart of Europe’s finest chocolate tradition. When the opportunity arose to return to her hometown of Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, South Africa, Ela brought her fledgling business with her. Since then, Sjukla has continued to grow, carving out a unique place in the Bay and beyond.
The name Sjukla is inspired by the West Flanders pronunciation of the word chocolate, a nod to Ela’s Belgian roots and the heritage behind every piece we create. Each chocolate is handcrafted using time-honoured methods and the finest natural ingredients. Wherever possible, we source local, homegrown produce to capture the true flavours of the region, while also importing key ingredients directly from Belgium to ensure the authenticity and quality that lie at the heart of our craft.
Our current range includes a classic collection of pralines with seasonal variations alongside a selection of chocolate slabs. Every piece is made by hand—from the precise tempering of the chocolate to the delicate decoration—giving Sjukla its distinctive blend of homegrown warmth and European craftsmanship.
We are also exploring new horizons with fair trade, bean-to-bar chocolate sourced and processed entirely on the African continent, offering full transparency in the supply chain.
This exciting development reflects our commitment to ethical sourcing and the celebration of Africa’s finest ingredients.
